Tai Babilonia remembers vividly that day when she watched on television from her Los Angeles home the grace and artistry of figure skating champion Peggy Fleming. The six-year old was mesmerized by the beauty that she saw. From that moment on, she was inspired to step out onto the ice to begin her own canvas of ice magic, which would ultimately lead her a 42-year career in the sport.
Her competitive highlights include:
- Youngest pair team to represent the U.S. at the World Championships
- Five consecutive U.S. Senior Pairs titles
- 1979 World Figure Skating Champions – first Americans to do so in 29 years, upsetting a fourteen year Soviet domination, which has never been repeated to this day.
- Two-time Olympians, heavily favored in 1980 to win the Gold but had to withdraw due to an injury sustained by her partner Randy Gardner.
Her professional career began shortly following the Olympics. She spent three years as a special guest star with the Ice Capades with Randy Gardner. This would launch her onto a spring board and a pathway of a lifetime of guest appearances.
Her diverse professional career, in partnership with her skating collaborator Randy, has had important milestones. One honor was their induction into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame. Pivotal opportunities such as this has helped to influence her more to nurture her own desires and dreams within the ice industry. Performing recently in the Fox Network show ‘Skating With Celebrities, Tai has performed in some of the most prestigious venues throughout the United States – Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe and Atlantic City celebrated hotel/casinos, the Universal Amphitheater, the Dorothy Chandler, Kennedy Center, at Wembley Arena London, in a special appearance for Queen Elizabeth and a White House guest of Presidents Carter, Ford, Reagan, and Clinton.
Her background in the artistic arenas and her desire to explore more from a producer and business side of the entertainment industry has lead Tai to collaborate with Randy on a published autobiography, “Forever Two as One.” This candid coffee table book packed with photos and quotes from the world’s top skating stars, is a thank you to all the fans worldwide that have supported them throughout their career. The book is currently available on Tai’s website, www.taibabilonia.com. Her focus and determination to create new opportunities and expand upon her talents have presented itself by her becoming the official spokesperson for Skin Protect by Natura, an all natural skin moisturizer which is also available on her website; creating Golden Skates Productions, a film/TV company that was formed to develop projects that are close to her heart. Presently, a bio pic on the life of her coach, mentor, inspiration and friend, Mabel Fairbanks is in development.
However for all the championship honors and awards she has received, one of the biggest accomplishments and most rewarding moment in her life now is her son Scout. With her own background as a world class athlete and by providing him the love, encouragement and support needed, his own journey to strive to become the very best he can as a budding junior tennis player is taking place.
